Newest Starship booster is significantly damaged during testing early Friday

In the early hours of Friday in South Texas, SpaceX's latest Starship first stage encountered significant damage during its pre-launch testing phase. Just a day prior, the company had unveiled this massive rocket, marking the commencement of its test campaign. On social media platform X, SpaceX announced that the initial operations aimed to evaluate the redesigned propellant systems and structural integrity of the booster. Testing began on Thursday night at the Massey Test Site, located a few miles from SpaceX's primary production facility at Starbase Texas. However, footage from independent sources captured a troubling incident at 4:04 AM CT (10:04 UTC) on Friday, showing a dramatic event affecting the lower section of the rocket. Reports suggest that Booster 18 may have experienced an explosion during these tests. Images following the incident revealed substantial damage, particularly to the lower half of the booster, which houses its large liquid oxygen tank. As of several hours after the event, there has been no official comment from SpaceX or its founder, Elon Musk, regarding the failure. The potential loss of Booster 18 represents a critical blow for SpaceX. Although the company has ample resources and has established a significant production facility in South Texas, this rocket was particularly important. It is the first iteration of Starship Version 3, designed with numerous enhancements and fixes aimed at improving reliability and performance compared to earlier models. The booster was slated for cryogenic propellant loading and pressurization tests, followed by a test-firing of its 33 upgraded Raptor engines—an opportunity that unfortunately never arrived.
