SpaceX files confidentially for IPO in mega listing potentially valued at $1.75 trillion, report says

In a bold move towards becoming a public company, SpaceX, the aerospace firm founded by Elon Musk, has reportedly submitted confidential documents to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for an initial public offering (IPO). According to Bloomberg, the company might target a staggering valuation of $1.75 trillion, as revealed by sources familiar with the situation. This confidential filing, which allows private companies to submit their IPO registration statements 15 days prior to public marketing, enables SpaceX to gather private feedback from the SEC. The company has engaged an extensive lineup of 21 banks to facilitate this monumental IPO, internally dubbed "Project Apex," as reported by Reuters. If successful, SpaceX could raise an astounding $75 billion, setting a record for the largest IPO in history, dwarfing the previous record held by Saudi Aramco's $29 billion listing in 2019. Having raised an estimated $10 billion as a private entity since its inception in 2002, SpaceX has established itself as a dominant force in the space industry, known for its reusable rockets and the Starlink satellite communications network. Musk has transformed the traditional space contracting sector by introducing Silicon Valley's innovative culture, spurring a wave of private technology ventures and a surge in space startups. Notably, in February, SpaceX acquired Musk’s xAI for $1.25 trillion, further expanding its portfolio to include this cutting-edge generative AI lab and X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. While Musk had previously stated that SpaceX would remain private until its spacecraft reached Mars, the urgent need for funding has prompted a change in strategy. The company is now focused on lunar ambitions and plans to develop a network of up to one million data center satellites, launched from the Moon. This shift is critical as SpaceX requires significant capital to develop the Starship rocket, essential for its future operations and NASA's ambitions to reach the Moon ahead of China. Additionally, funds are needed to acquire spectrum for Starlink and to support the computational demands of xAI's deep learning initiatives.
