Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI has been bleeding staff since its merger

Elon Musk's recently rebranded SpaceXAI is experiencing a significant loss of talent, with over 50 researchers and engineers reportedly leaving since February. According to a report from The Information, these departures include several key figures involved in coding, world models, and the Grok voice project. Notably, competitors such as Meta and Thinking Machine Labs have begun to recruit these former employees, resulting in a considerable reduction of the core pre-training team, which now consists of only a few members. The trend of departures accelerated after the merger between Musk's companies in February, with at least 11 individuals from xAI moving to Meta, alongside seven who transitioned to Thinking Machine Labs, as reported by The Information. This follows an earlier wave of departures that included two co-founders of xAI, which was acquired by SpaceX during the merger. The loss of talent has sparked concerns among employees and stakeholders regarding the company's commitment to developing cutting-edge AI models. The pre-training team, essential for creating new AI algorithms, has been particularly impacted, especially after the exit of team lead Juntang Zhuang. Many insiders are questioning whether SpaceXAI can maintain its edge in AI development amid these challenges. Additionally, the intense work culture established by Musk has contributed to the resignations, with reports suggesting that unrealistic deadlines for model training have led to compromised project quality. Some employees have expressed frustration over the pressure, reflecting similar sentiments heard across Musk's other enterprises, including Tesla. Financial motivations may also play a role in the exodus, as SpaceX frequently offers share buyback options, allowing employees to sell vested stock privately. With the prospect of a lucrative IPO on the horizon, many employees may feel more inclined to pursue opportunities where they can thrive without excessive stress, particularly if they believe that their potential financial gains are more assured elsewhere. TechCrunch has reached out for comments from SpaceX regarding this situation.
