SpaceX faces two new lawsuits alleging safety‐related retaliation

SpaceX is facing serious allegations as two former employees have initiated separate lawsuits claiming wrongful termination linked to safety concerns. Robert Markert, a former supervisor who dedicated 13 years to the company, asserts that his warnings about potential dangers during the rocket fairing recovery process were dismissed in favor of cost-cutting measures. Shortly after raising these concerns, he was let go from his position. Both lawsuits, which emphasize a troubling pattern of prioritizing speed and budget over employee safety, have been moved to federal court. As SpaceX endeavors to prepare its Starship ultra-heavy rocket for missions with NASA and commercial clients, these complaints highlight significant safety issues within the company’s operations. Markert reported that employees were often pushed to work extensive hours, sometimes up to 20 consecutive days, resulting in a high-pressure environment where injuries went unreported due to fear of retaliation. He expressed that requests for additional training were met with resistance, as management claimed there was insufficient time and funds to invest in employee safety. The second lawsuit comes from David Lavalle, a plumber at SpaceX, who claims he was terminated after requesting medical leave for several work-related injuries, including severe pain affecting his foot, neck, back, and wrists. Lavalle, who has been with the company since 2014, alleges that he felt compelled to avoid filing for worker’s compensation for many of his injuries due to fear of retaliation. Both lawsuits were initially filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court before being shifted to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. Reports indicate that SpaceX has seen a concerning rise in worker injury rates, with data revealing the Starbase complex in Texas had an injury rate of 4.27 per 100 workers in 2023, which is significantly higher than the aerospace manufacturing average. As these legal battles unfold, the focus remains on SpaceX’s commitment to employee safety amid its ambitious plans for expansion and innovation in aerospace technology.
