SpaceX has announced that it has deactivated more than 2,500 Starlink terminals suspected of being utilized by scammers in Myanmar. Lauren Dreyer, the vice president of Starlink business operations, shared this information in a post on social media after reports surfaced that Myanmar's military had dismantled a significant scam operation in the region. Dreyer emphasized that SpaceX adheres to local regulations in all the countries where Starlink is authorized to operate. "We continuously work to identify breaches of our Acceptable Use Policy and relevant laws. When violations are detected, we take necessary actions, which may include collaboration with law enforcement worldwide," she stated. In Myanmar's case, SpaceX proactively disabled over 2,500 Starlink units located near identified scam centers. Notably, Starlink does not possess a license to operate in Myanmar. While the specifics of how the terminals were disabled were not disclosed, it's understood that SpaceX can disable terminals either by their ID numbers or through geofencing techniques that prevent them from receiving signals. Recent reports from Myanmar state media indicated that the military successfully shut down a major online scam network situated close to the Thailand border, resulting in the detention of over 2,000 individuals and the seizure of numerous Starlink satellite internet terminals. The Associated Press reported that the military's operations targeted 260 unregistered buildings, leading to the confiscation of 30 Starlink terminals and the arrest of 2,198 people. Furthermore, Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, a spokesperson for Myanmar's military government, alleged that leaders of the Karen National Union, an armed ethnic group opposing military rule, were involved in the scam activities at a site known as KK Park. This organization is part of the broader armed resistance in Myanmar's ongoing civil conflict, and they have denied any connection to the scams. Recent satellite imagery and drone footage have shown increased construction activity within the heavily secured areas around Myawaddy, along the Thailand-Myanmar border, suggesting the extensive use of Starlink's satellite internet service in these operations.
