On its inaugural day as a publicly traded entity, SpaceX saw its shares skyrocket to $150, marking an impressive 11% increase from its initial public offering (IPO) price of $135. During midday trading, the stock even peaked at $176, pushing the company's valuation to nearly $2.3 trillion before closing at $160.95, a remarkable 19% rise. The surging demand for SpaceX shares was anticipated, as the IPO was oversubscribed by four times, according to Bloomberg. This high demand indicates that many institutional investors were unable to secure allocations and are now purchasing shares in the open market. The limited availability of shares also played a role, with only about 4% of the total shares released for public trading, while the majority remains with early investors and employees. SpaceX's strategic lobbying efforts to adjust inclusion rules for several indexes, including the Nasdaq 100, will allow it to be listed within days rather than months. This change is expected to further fuel demand as large institutional buyers prepare to acquire shares. In the hours following the historic debut, Robinhood reported unprecedented traffic on its trading platform. The IPO represents one of the most significant financial successes in venture capital history. For instance, Founders Fund, which invested $600 million in SpaceX, now sees its stake, estimated at 3%, valued at over $50 billion based on the IPO price. Similarly, stakes held by Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia are valued at over $10 billion and $20 billion, respectively. With the shares debuting at $150, founder Elon Musk has officially become the world's first trillionaire. Moreover, reports indicate that approximately 4,400 current and former SpaceX employees will achieve millionaire status, while around 400 will become centimillionaires. This unprecedented IPO marks a significant milestone in the financial landscape and SpaceX's journey as a leader in space exploration.
