SpaceX eyes mid-March for first test of upgraded Starship rocket

SpaceX is gearing up for the first test of its upgraded Starship V3 rocket, now scheduled for mid-March, as announced by CEO Elon Musk on his social media platform X. The latest iteration of the Starship is not only larger but also significantly more powerful. This third version of the rocket is crucial for launching the next-generation Starlink satellites, which promise enhanced data speeds but come with increased size and weight. Notably, Starship V3 will be the first model designed to dock with other Starships while in Earth’s orbit, a vital capability for future missions to the Moon and Mars. As SpaceX races towards a potential initial public offering later this year, the company faces pressure from the Trump administration to ensure that U.S. astronauts return to the lunar surface before the end of his second term. Starship, touted as the most powerful rocket ever built, plays a pivotal role in NASA's ambitions to achieve this goal. While SpaceX was initially aiming for a late 2025 launch of Starship V3, setbacks have occurred. In November, a booster stage explosion during testing caused significant damage, leading to further investigations into the incident. Although the company stated that the explosion happened during a gas system pressure test, more detailed explanations are still awaited. SpaceX is determined to move beyond the challenges faced by the second version of Starship. While Starship V2 successfully reached orbit, deployed test versions of the new Starlink satellites, and caught multiple booster stages post-launch, it also encountered several explosions and failures. These incidents were partly due to SpaceX’s risk-taking developmental strategy, which involves pushing vehicles to their limits to refine future designs. As SpaceX continues to solidify its position at the forefront of the global launch market, competition is emerging. Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin successfully launched its New Glenn rocket for the first time in January 2025, followed by a second flight in November, which carried a commercial payload for NASA and achieved the first booster stage landing. Blue Origin is preparing for a third launch of New Glenn in late February and has plans to dispatch its own lunar lander to the Moon soon after. Although New Glenn is smaller than Starship, Blue Origin has announced plans for a larger version to compete more directly with SpaceX’s heavy-lift capabilities.
