SpaceX cleared to fly Starship again after booster failure in May

SpaceX has received the green light from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to resume flights of its Starship prototypes, following the identification of the cause behind the booster stage failure that occurred during a flight in May. The company announced that the next launch could take place as early as Thursday, July 16, marking the second launch of the third version (V3) of the Starship. This upcoming flight is particularly significant as it will carry the first third-generation Starlink satellites into orbit. Unlike previous flights that only launched dummy versions of the satellites, this mission will feature operational satellites aimed at enhancing internet service capabilities. The upcoming test will be SpaceX's second attempt with the Starship system since its initial public offering (IPO) on June 12, where it raised nearly $86 billion, making it one of the most valuable companies globally. The first launch of the V3 Starship on May 22 was largely successful, with the Super Heavy booster lifting the 407-foot rocket before the upper stage separated and deployed 20 satellite simulators alongside two modified Starlink satellites that captured images of the rocket's exterior. However, the booster did not execute a successful landing in the Gulf of Mexico as intended, crashing into the water due to issues with engine re-ignition during the critical moment of booster separation. SpaceX identified that slight differences in the engine startup sequence caused the booster to veer off course. Improvements have been made to the engine startup sequence to enhance the reliability of the booster’s maneuvers. The FAA's investigation pointed out that the probable causes of the booster failure included heat-related effects on propulsion components during ascent and incorrect alarm settings in the engine system. In response, SpaceX has modified its engine alarm and abort systems to mitigate the chances of a repeat incident. While the upper stage of Starship V3 managed to deploy its test payload successfully, it did so while losing one of its three Raptor engines designed for space use. To avoid such issues in future flights, SpaceX has implemented several hardware and operational adjustments. This next test will be pivotal as SpaceX aims to deploy 20 new V3 Starlink satellites, which are meant to enhance the satellite network's overall capacity and user speeds. These satellites will communicate with the larger Starlink constellation using high-capacity lasers and will be designed to disintegrate in the atmosphere approximately 20 minutes after deployment. Notably, six of these satellites will be equipped with cameras to provide visual data of the Starship during its flight. The advancements in both the Starship and Starlink systems are crucial for SpaceX's ambitions, especially since Starlink has been the sole profitable segment of the company leading up to its IPO. The success of the Starship is essential for realizing SpaceX's long-term goals, which include developing a fully reusable rocket system suitable for interplanetary travel and space-based data centers.
