In a significant move for both companies, SpaceX has struck a deal with AI lab Anthropic, agreeing to a staggering $1.25 billion per month until May 2029. This agreement centers around Anthropic purchasing computing capacity from SpaceX's Colossus data center located in Tennessee, aimed at enhancing its AI offerings for an expanding clientele. According to SpaceX's recently released S-1 filing, Anthropic will also tap into resources from the newly established Colossus 2 data center. Initially, Anthropic will benefit from discounted rates for the months of May and June, with the stipulation that either party can terminate the agreement with a 90-day notice period. Should the deal remain intact, it has the potential to generate over $40 billion for SpaceX over its duration. Tom Brown, Anthropic’s computing chief, confirmed to Business Insider that the Colossus infrastructure will be utilized primarily for inference tasks, where AI models generate outputs based on data. This deal marks a strategic move for SpaceX, which anticipates securing similar agreements in the future. The S-1 documentation highlights this strategy as a way to monetize excess computing power while still retaining the flexibility to redirect resources for internal projects as needed. However, the path to securing this deal has not come without its challenges. The costs associated with acquiring the necessary GPUs and cloud services have put a strain on SpaceX's finances, with AI-related operational losses soaring to more than $6 billion last year, largely due to increased cloud service expenses and GPU depreciation. The first quarter of this year saw these losses more than double to nearly $2.5 billion. To mitigate these costs, SpaceX is considering manufacturing its own GPUs, a move that would position it as a competitor to industry leader Nvidia. Additionally, SpaceX has found itself in a complex relationship with Google, utilizing Google Cloud via its Starlink subsidiary while simultaneously emerging as a competitor by offering substantial computing services to Anthropic. Furthermore, ambitious plans for SpaceX to establish data centers in space are reportedly in discussion with Google. The S-1 filing also highlights the burgeoning market for AI infrastructure, estimating its potential worth at $2.4 trillion, driven by the increasing demand for AI computing capabilities and current GPU rental costs.
