SpaceX swipes yet another military contract from United Launch Alliance

In a significant shift within the military satellite launch sector, the US Space Force has once again turned to SpaceX for a critical mission. This marks the fourth occasion in just over a year that the Space Force has opted to transfer a satellite launch from United Launch Alliance (ULA) to SpaceX due to the former's ongoing challenges. Originally scheduled to deploy the final satellite for the GPS Block III program this month, ULA, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, has been unable to meet the launch requirements. Space Systems Command, which oversees the procurement of military spacecraft, announced on Friday that it would utilize a Falcon 9 rocket from SpaceX instead. This decision underscores a growing trend, as the Space Force previously shifted three other GPS satellite launches from ULA to SpaceX, citing similar issues with ULA’s Vulcan rocket. The Vulcan rocket, which has been grounded multiple times since its anticipated debut in 2020, is now facing scrutiny after experiencing problems with its solid rocket boosters during recent flights. An investigation into the initial failure revealed a manufacturing defect that caused a critical component to malfunction shortly after launch. Though officials have yet to disclose the findings related to the most recent booster issue, preliminary observations suggest it may be connected to the earlier problem. Despite these setbacks, the Vulcan rocket managed to successfully reach orbit following each anomaly. However, the repeated nature of these failures has caused concern among military officials. The head of the Space Force's launch program recently indicated that the investigation into the booster failures could take months, leading to a temporary halt on launching payloads with the Vulcan until all issues are thoroughly resolved. In the meantime, ULA is set to receive a classified military launch in 2028, as it continues to navigate the challenges of its launch capabilities.
