SpaceX raises $25 billion in debt sale less than two weeks after IPO

In a remarkable financial maneuver, SpaceX has successfully secured $25 billion through a debt sale, just under two weeks following its historic initial public offering (IPO). The announcement was made on Monday, detailing an offering of senior unsecured notes aimed at initially raising $20 billion. However, by Tuesday, demand surged, leading SpaceX to increase the sale by an additional $5 billion, with total orders reaching nearly $90 billion, as reported by sources familiar with the matter. Major banks involved in managing this substantial bond sale include notable names such as Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, and Morgan Stanley. This strategic move comes on the heels of SpaceX's record-breaking IPO, which positioned CEO Elon Musk as the world’s first trillionaire. The IPO alone generated close to $86 billion, and recent disclosures indicate that SpaceX now boasts over $100 billion in cash reserves. The capital raised will primarily support the ongoing development of SpaceX’s ambitious Starship rockets and the expansion of its Starlink satellite internet service. Additionally, the funds will facilitate a variety of artificial intelligence projects, including enhancements to its Grok models and the development of coding agents. Furthermore, SpaceX is progressing with a $60 billion all-stock acquisition of the AI coding startup, Cursor. Despite its impressive ventures, the only segment of SpaceX that currently generates profit is Starlink. According to the company's prospectus, SpaceX has accumulated losses totaling $41.3 billion since its inception in 2002. This debt sale stands out as one of the largest in the current AI era, following earlier substantial bond offerings by major companies such as Oracle, Amazon, and Alphabet.
