SpaceX is gearing up for the 11th full-scale test flight of its Starship rocket, set to take place Monday evening. The company aims to conclude a challenging year with a successful one-hour journey from South Texas to the Indian Ocean. Liftoff of the Super Heavy booster, paired with the Starship upper stage, is scheduled for 6:15 PM CDT (7:15 PM EDT; 23:15 UTC), within a 75-minute launch window. The operational team, stationed a few miles from the launch pad at Starbase, Texas, will commence loading over 10.5 million pounds of super-cooled methane and liquid oxygen into the two-stage rocket approximately one hour before launch. As the countdown progresses, the colossal rocket will undergo a steering check, culminating in the launch director providing the final go-ahead. The Super Heavy booster, equipped with 33 Raptor engines, will generate about 16.7 million pounds of thrust, surpassing the Soviet N1 rocket's power by 60%, making it the most powerful rocket in history. Notably, this will mark the second utilization of a previously flown Super Heavy booster, which successfully launched and landed during a Starship test flight in March. For those familiar with the previous Starship mission in August, much of this flight will appear similar. The towering 403-foot (123-meter) rocket will ascend on a curved trajectory over the Gulf of Mexico, discarding its Super Heavy booster just over two and a half minutes into the flight. A split second prior to this staging, the six engines of the Starship upper stage will ignite to propel the spacecraft further into orbit. During its descent, the booster stage will implement a new landing burn engine configuration designed for the next iteration of the rocket. This innovative sequence will utilize 13 of the 33 engines, transitioning to five engines and finally relying on three center engines for the concluding phase of the burn. SpaceX has indicated that this "13-5-3" approach will enhance the rocket's resilience in the event of an engine failure, a significant upgrade from the previous method that switched directly from 13 to three engines.
