Under the leadership of Elon Musk, SpaceX has taken a significant step by confidentially filing for an initial public offering (IPO) with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This move could pave the way for what may become the largest stock market debut ever recorded, as reported by Bloomberg. The aerospace and satellite communications giant is aiming for a staggering valuation of approximately $1.75 trillion. U.S. regulations permit companies to submit IPO documents confidentially at least 15 days prior to officially marketing their offerings, enabling them to manage regulatory feedback without public scrutiny. In an unprecedented venture, SpaceX is seeking to raise up to $75 billion through this IPO, which would eclipse the previous record set by Saudi Aramco’s $29 billion listing in 2019. Sources indicate that around 21 banks have been appointed to assist in the IPO, codenamed “Project Apex.” If successful, this listing could invigorate global IPO markets that have experienced a slowdown in recent years. Since its establishment in 2002, SpaceX has revolutionized the space industry through its innovative reusable rocket technology and its rapidly expanding satellite internet service, Starlink, which operates a large constellation of satellites. The company has already raised about $10 billion while privately held and was last valued at approximately $800 billion during a secondary share sale. In February, SpaceX expanded its portfolio by acquiring xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence endeavor, which brought the combined valuation to around $1.25 trillion. This broader enterprise also encompasses the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter. The anticipated scale of SpaceX's IPO is expected to attract significant interest from both institutional and retail investors, driven by Musk’s impressive track record and SpaceX’s leading role in commercial space launches and satellite connectivity. This IPO could also set a precedent for other major tech companies, with AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic reportedly eyeing the public market as well.
