SpaceX may spend up to $119 billion on ‘Terafab’ chip factory in Texas

SpaceX, the aerospace firm led by Elon Musk, is reportedly eyeing an investment of $55 billion to kickstart a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Grimes County, Texas. This initial expenditure is part of a larger vision, with total costs potentially reaching up to $119 billion for what has been termed the 'Terafab' project. The proposed facility aims to be a cutting-edge, vertically integrated semiconductor and advanced computing manufacturing site. Musk's ambitions for this project also involve collaboration with Tesla and the semiconductor giant Intel. Together, they strive to produce chips tailored for various applications including AI servers, satellites, and autonomous vehicles. Musk envisions this factory as capable of generating 1 Terawatt of power per year, addressing a pressing demand for chips to support his companies’ rapidly growing needs in artificial intelligence and robotics. In his own words, he emphasized, "We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab." However, Musk recently indicated on social media that Grimes County is just one of several potential sites for this massive project. The initiative reflects Musk's commitment to ensuring that xAI, his AI venture, has the necessary computational resources to develop its Grok series of AI models. Moreover, he envisions the establishment of space-based data centers to cater to the surging demand for AI computing power. The combined valuation of SpaceX and xAI is estimated at $1.25 trillion, with plans for a public offering in June, underscoring the high stakes involved in this innovative undertaking.
