
SpaceX is preparing for the 12th test flight of its colossal Starship rocket, scheduled for Thursday. This launch marks a significant milestone as the company approaches its initial public offering (IPO) anticipated next month. The flight will showcase Starship V3, engineered to transport 100 metric tons to Earth's orbit in a fully reusable setup, promising rapid turnaround times comparable to commercial aviation, as noted in SpaceX's IPO prospectus. The launch window opens at 6:30 p.m. ET and will be available for live streaming. However, potential weather issues or other unforeseen factors could cause delays. Elon Musk's innovative rocket company has invested over $15 billion into the Starship program, according to the recent filing. SpaceX emphasizes that Starship is crucial for accelerating satellite launches to expand its Starlink constellation more efficiently than the current Falcon 9 rocket allows. Starlink provides wireless internet access to various users, including consumers, businesses, and government entities. The latest test flight will occur from a newly constructed launch pad at SpaceX's Starbase facility in Texas, previously known as Boca Chica. This event is likely to be SpaceX's final opportunity to impress investors with a Starship launch before the company's shares become available on the public market. In the previous year, SpaceX's space segment generated $4.1 billion in revenue but recorded an operating loss of $657 million. The company relies heavily on Starlink for a significant portion of its income, with the connectivity unit generating sales of $11.4 billion and an operating income of $4.4 billion in 2025. Starlink accounted for 61% of the company's total sales last year and 69% in the first quarter of this year. In the prospectus, SpaceX stated that its growth strategy hinges on enhancing its launch frequency and payload capacity, which is closely tied to the successful large-scale development of Starship. Musk has ambitious plans for the Starship rocket, envisioning it as a vehicle to transport both cargo and up to 100 people into orbit, with the ultimate goal of colonizing Mars. Additionally, NASA is counting on Starship to serve as the lunar lander for its Artemis IV mission, set for early 2028, marking the first return of U.S. astronauts to the moon in over 50 years. Standing at 408 feet tall when fully stacked, Starship V3 is equipped with new engines designed to enhance its power, generating an impressive 18 million pounds of thrust. For this test flight, SpaceX will be carrying mock Starlink satellites, without any astronauts or additional cargo on board.
