The anticipated SpaceX IPO is set to create a wave of new millionaires and billionaires, sparking excitement among current and former employees about how to best utilize their newfound wealth. Although these individuals won't be able to sell their shares immediately, many are already strategizing their spending plans, which could significantly impact luxury markets in areas surrounding SpaceX's facilities. Real estate professional Gerard Bisignano has noted an uptick in inquiries from SpaceX employees looking for homes in California's South Bay region. These individuals, typically in their 30s and 40s, are expressing astonishment at the prospect of being able to purchase homes for their families and enjoy greater financial freedom. Bisignano, a partner at Vista Sotheby’s, expects a notable rise in demand for upscale properties in the vicinity of SpaceX’s office, much like the surge experienced around Facebook’s headquarters after its IPO in 2012, which saw home values soar by 21%. In addition to California, interest is also swelling in the Austin area, where SpaceX's Bastrop campus is situated. Real estate agent Gary Dolch has observed a similar enthusiasm among employees seeking luxury condos and expansive ranches. He believes the IPO will rejuvenate the luxury housing market in Austin, which has seen a decline in recent years. The splurge doesn't just stop at real estate; luxury cars and high-end watches are also on the shopping list. Bisignano predicts that buyers will be vying for homes equipped with four-car garages to house their new Ferraris. Watches, particularly Rolex models like the Daytona and GMT-Master II, are expected to be popular as a more everyday status symbol following a major liquidity event. D.J. Hanlon and Kolin Jones, executives from private jet companies, have reported a surge in inquiries related to the upcoming IPO. Many SpaceX employees are looking to charter jets for celebratory trips, with Las Vegas being a favored destination among younger travelers without children, while family trips often head to places like Aspen or Disney World. As these employees embrace their new wealth, the luxury market is poised for a significant boost, marking a new era of spending in the wake of the SpaceX IPO.
