In a remarkable display of engineering prowess, SpaceX's Starship rocket soared into the sky during its tenth test flight on Tuesday evening, achieving two pivotal milestones after a series of setbacks. The towering 403-foot rocket lifted off from SpaceX's Starbase facility at 7:30 PM ET, following two earlier scrubs this week. Powered by 33 methane-fueled Raptor engines, the rocket successfully separated approximately three minutes into the flight. Notably, the Super Heavy booster showcased a new landing maneuver by intentionally shutting down its primary engines and switching to backup engines, a strategy aimed at enhancing safety protocols in the event of a failure. This maneuver culminated in a controlled splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico, appearing to go off without a hitch. Meanwhile, the upper stage, known as Starship, made history by reaching space and, for the first time, opening its payload door to deploy eight Starlink mass-similar satellites, a capability previously hindered by technical difficulties in other missions. Additionally, the team managed to reignite one of the Raptor engines while in space before directing the vehicle towards the Indian Ocean, where it ultimately splashed down, tipped over, and exploded. The mission also provided invaluable data regarding the thermal protection system, as the ship faced extreme heat during its atmospheric reentry. Engineers conducted several experiments, including the removal of tiles from certain sections of the ship to assess its performance during reentry, as well as testing a new metallic tile and an actively cooled variant. Most importantly, the upper stage completed its full flight sequence and maintained communication with SpaceX engineers throughout, a significant improvement over the previous flight, which experienced loss of control and failed to open its payload doors. This successful test is a crucial step forward for SpaceX, which has faced numerous technical challenges with the Starship upper stage. As the company continues to work towards its ambitious goals, including potential missions to the Moon and Mars, this test signifies a promising advancement in the Starship program.
