SpaceX completes fueling test, setting stage for first launch of Starship V3

SpaceX has successfully completed a fueling test for its latest iteration of the Starship rocket, known as Starship Version 3. This marks the third time within three years that the company has assembled a new model on the launch pad located in South Texas, just a stone's throw from the US-Mexico border. Starship V3 stands taller and boasts increased power compared to its predecessors. Among the significant enhancements are the upgraded Raptor engines, which offer greater thrust and efficiency for both the Super Heavy booster and the upper stage of Starship. Additionally, a new lattice-like structure has been introduced at the top of the booster to facilitate hot staging, and the rocket features three modified grid fins—down from four—to aid in the recovery and reuse of the first stage. This version of the Starship is crucial for upcoming projects, especially for testing in-orbit refueling capabilities. Mastering this technology is essential for future missions that venture beyond low-Earth orbit. Initially, these refueling operations will support NASA's Artemis program, allowing Starships to serve as lunar landers. As an ongoing development initiative, the Starship program continues to evolve, with further iterations already in the works. Nevertheless, Starship V3 represents a pivotal step towards SpaceX’s goal of deploying Starships in space rather than just demonstrating their capabilities. While a specific launch date has not yet been confirmed, recent maritime and airspace warnings suggested that a launch could occur as early as Friday evening. However, preparations were delayed over the weekend, shifting the potential launch window. Updated maritime warnings released on Monday indicated that SpaceX is now aiming for a launch attempt on Tuesday, May 19. Ground teams at Starbase managed to stack the Starship upper stage onto the Super Heavy booster, resulting in the first complete assembly of Starship V3, which measures 408 feet (124 meters) in height, slightly exceeding the last model.
