
SpaceX, the operator of the Starlink satellite network, has raised concerns about Amazon's recent satellite launches, claiming they violate orbital debris guidelines. According to SpaceX, Amazon's satellites were deployed at excessively high altitudes, which could heighten the risk of collisions with existing satellites and other spacecraft. The accusations come on the heels of two Starlink satellite failures reported by SpaceX, which resulted in additional space debris. In a statement, SpaceX criticized both Amazon and its launch partner Arianespace for what it described as negligence that significantly jeopardizes the safety of operational satellite systems and crewed spacecraft. Amazon’s satellite initiative, previously known as Kuiper Systems, is actively deploying satellites in low-Earth orbit (LEO) to compete with Starlink's expansive broadband satellite network. In response to SpaceX's claims, Amazon firmly denied any wrongdoing regarding launch altitudes, asserting that it adheres to all safety requirements. Furthermore, Amazon pointed out that SpaceX had previously assisted in launching its satellites to similar altitudes last year. According to Amazon, SpaceX only objected to the launch parameters after relocating its own Starlink satellites to nearby altitudes. Adjusting the altitude of a recent launch would have resulted in significant delays, as stated by Amazon. The tension between the two companies has escalated over the years, with both accusing each other of manipulating FCC proceedings to hinder satellite launches. Amazon clarified that it had previously informed the FCC about the altitudes in question, which SpaceX is now contesting. Notably, SpaceX's CEO Elon Musk has connections within the FCC, as Chairman Brendan Carr has publicly criticized Amazon's efforts to block SpaceX’s request for authorization to deploy up to 1 million satellites. In a recent letter to the FCC, SpaceX alleged that Amazon continues to breach its approved orbital debris mitigation plan by deploying satellites at altitudes 50-90 km higher than permitted, and without adequate coordination. However, Amazon has stated that its Kuiper satellites are initially deployed at or near 400 km before being raised to their final operational altitudes between 590 km and 630 km. They confirmed that collision avoidance measures are implemented following the initial deployment and will be maintained throughout the satellites' operational life.
