Rocket Report: OpenAI’s launch overture; South Korea making progress in space

Welcome back to the Rocket Report! In this edition, we dive into the latest developments in the global space industry following the Thanksgiving holiday. Recently, international launches have dominated the headlines, with notable performances coming from various countries. While China's space sector celebrated significant milestones in its launch efforts, Russian rockets faced challenges. A recent test of a Russian intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on November 28 ended in failure, as the missile struggled to reach even 4,000 feet before crashing near the launch site in Orenburg Oblast. The missile was reportedly part of a scheduled test intended to simulate the delivery of a dummy warhead to an impact zone nearly 4,000 miles away. However, video footage shared on social media revealed a catastrophic launch, with the missile veering off course and ultimately losing power. Analysts suggest that this failed launch involved the RS-28 Sarmat missile, known for its capability to hit targets over 11,000 miles away, making it one of the world's longest-range missiles. Designed to carry multiple nuclear warheads or advanced countermeasures, the Sarmat is viewed as a critical component of Russia's nuclear arsenal, specifically intended for potential conflict scenarios. Despite a promising initial test flight in 2022, the Sarmat program has been marred by a series of setbacks, including a significant explosion that destroyed one of its silos last year. As the world watches these developments, we can expect more than 15 orbital launch attempts globally before the year's end, showcasing the ongoing race in space exploration and defense technology.
