With another record broken, the world’s busiest spaceport keeps getting busier

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida—On Monday night, another Falcon 9 rocket successfully lifted off from this iconic launch site, carrying 29 additional Starlink Internet satellites into orbit. This marked the 94th orbital launch from Florida's Space Coast in 2025, surpassing the previous record for the most satellite launches within a single calendar year at the world's busiest spaceport. Just two days prior, a Chinese Long March 11 rocket launched from a maritime platform, contributing to a remarkable total of 255 missions aimed at reaching orbit this year—a new global benchmark for launch activity. By Wednesday, as more missions continued to unfold, this number climbed to 259, indicating that the world is on track for approximately 300 orbital launches by the end of 2025. This figure represents a significant increase compared to the 135 orbital launches recorded in 2021. As I stood a few miles away from the launch pad, I took note of my surroundings before witnessing SpaceX’s Falcon 9 ascend into the night sky. Unlike the bustling crowds that would typically gather for such an event, I found only a couple of enthusiastic retirees sharing the moment with me. In fact, during the same timeframe, Orlando International Airport recorded the same number of airplane departures in just three hours. While larger events, such as the test flight of SpaceX’s Starship megarocket in Texas or Blue Origin's upcoming launch of its New Glenn heavy-lifter, still draw significant crowds, the routine nature of these rocket launches has transformed public interest. Aerospace engineers have long been cautioned against viewing space travel as a common occurrence to avoid complacency, which can lead to catastrophic failures and loss of life.
