How South Korea plans to best OpenAI, Google, others with homegrown AI

In an ambitious bid to bolster its artificial intelligence capabilities, South Korea is rallying its tech landscape to develop large language models that resonate with its unique language and cultural nuances. Recently, the country unveiled a significant sovereign AI initiative, committing ₩530 billion (approximately $390 million) to support five local companies in creating foundational AI models. This strategic move is designed to reduce dependence on foreign AI technologies, enhance national security, and maintain tighter control over data in the evolving AI landscape. The Ministry of Science and ICT has selected key players, including LG AI Research, SK Telecom, Naver Cloud, NC AI, and the startup Upstage, to spearhead this initiative. The government's plan involves biannual assessments of the participating companies, with underperformers being phased out and frontrunners receiving continued funding until only two remain to lead the nation's AI efforts. Each of these organizations brings distinct strengths to the competitive AI arena. LG AI Research, a subsidiary of LG Group, is advancing its Exaone 4.0 model, which integrates extensive language processing with sophisticated reasoning capabilities. With a focus on utilizing real-world industry data, LG aims to enhance the intelligence of its models rather than simply increasing their scale. According to co-head Honglak Lee, this approach is fundamental to delivering practical value beyond what generic models provide. In parallel, SK Telecom has introduced its personal AI agent, A., alongside its new large language model, A.X. The latest iteration, A.X 4.0, boasts a processing efficiency that surpasses GPT-4 for Korean inputs. SK's strategy emphasizes versatility, leveraging its telecom network to create AI solutions that integrate seamlessly into daily life, from customer service to mobility solutions. Naver Cloud has also made significant strides with its HyperClova model, which has evolved into HyperCLOVA X, offering a suite of AI-powered products, including an AI chatbot and a generative AI search engine. Naver aims to distinguish itself by integrating AI into core services and utilizing real-world data to enhance user experiences. Finally, Upstage, the only startup in this initiative, has made waves with its Solar Pro 2 model, which has been recognized for its competitive performance in the realm of Korean language processing. Upstage is dedicated to addressing specific industry needs in sectors like finance and medicine, striving to establish a robust Korean AI ecosystem. As South Korea embarks on this ambitious journey, the aim is clear: to cultivate a self-sufficient AI landscape that not only competes with but also excels beyond global giants such as OpenAI and Google.
