Measles continues raging in South Carolina; 99 new cases since Tuesday

An alarming measles outbreak in South Carolina, which commenced in October, continues to escalate. The state health department has reported a staggering 99 new cases identified within just three days, as of Friday. This surge brings the total number of confirmed cases to 310 since the onset of the outbreak. Currently, around 200 individuals are under quarantine, and nine are in isolation as authorities work tirelessly to manage the situation. However, the rapid spread of the virus, coupled with numerous exposure sites, is making it increasingly difficult for health officials to track and inform those at risk. Dr. Linda Bell, the state epidemiologist and incident commander for the outbreak, expressed concern, stating, "An increasing number of public exposure sites are being identified, with likely hundreds more people exposed who are unaware they need to be in quarantine if they aren't immune to measles." Historical data reveals that one case of measles can lead to up to 20 new infections among unvaccinated individuals, illustrating the critical importance of vaccination. The outbreak is particularly concentrated in Spartanburg County, where only 90% of students were fully vaccinated during the 2024–2025 school year, significantly lower than the 95% coverage needed to effectively halt the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases. This county-wide vaccination statistic may mask areas with even lower rates, heightening the risk of further transmission. Measles is recognized as one of the most contagious diseases, capable of spreading through the air and remaining infectious in a room for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. In instances of exposure, up to 90% of unvaccinated individuals are likely to contract the disease.
