The launch of Sora on Android has proven to be a remarkable success. Within its first day on the Google Play Store, the AI-driven video application from OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, achieved approximately 470,000 downloads across various markets, as reported by app analytics firm Appfigures. This impressive figure dwarfs the initial launch numbers on iOS, which saw 360,000 installs, marking a 327% increase in downloads. However, it's important to note that the iOS launch was limited to the U.S. and Canada and required an invite. In contrast, the Android version is accessible in several countries, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, with OpenAI lifting the invite-only restriction for key markets at the end of October. Users in these regions can now access the Sora app without needing an invitation. Despite its previous exclusive status, Sora has quickly become a standout application. Following its iOS debut, it achieved over a million downloads within the first week and climbed to the top of the App Store charts, currently holding the position of the No. 4 app on the U.S. App Store's iPhone Top Free Charts. Sora enables users to create videos using AI-driven prompts and even includes a feature called Cameos, allowing users and their friends to be animated by AI. The app's interface features a vertical feed reminiscent of TikTok, making it easy for users to explore content created with the technology. Additionally, Appfigures has updated its earlier estimates for the iOS launch, revising the initial day-one downloads from about 56,000 to a more accurate figure of approximately 110,000, with around 69,300 downloads occurring in the U.S. The Android version, however, recorded about 296,000 installs from U.S. users, underscoring the sustained interest in Sora even after the initial excitement of the iOS launch. Sora faces competition from Meta AI, which recently introduced its mobile app to European users following its earlier launch in the U.S.
