In a significant move that has stirred concern among gamers, Sony has announced it will cease production of physical discs for PlayStation games starting January 2028. From that date forward, all new titles will exclusively be available in digital format through the PlayStation Store and various retailers. The company framed this transition as a natural evolution to align with consumer preferences, emphasizing that the demand for digital media is rapidly overtaking that for physical discs. According to a blog post by Sony, digital downloads represented 78% of full-game purchases during the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026, a slight increase from 76% in the previous year. Sony plans to allocate resources towards enhancing how players access games and expanding their purchasing options, whether through retail partners or the PlayStation Store. With no other companies aside from its subsidiary, Sony Digital Audio Disc Corporation, producing PlayStation discs, this announcement signifies a pivotal shift towards a licensing-only sales model. Digital game copies offer distinct advantages, such as the convenience of immediate access, automatic updates, and minimal physical storage needs, while also contributing to waste reduction. Despite the gaming industry's overall movement towards digital distribution, the distinction between owning a physical game and possessing a digital license is crucial. According to Sony’s terms of service, purchasing a game from the PlayStation Store grants a personal license for private use, but does not equate to ownership. While it is uncommon for gaming companies to remove previously purchased titles from user libraries, the potential for such actions remains. A notable instance occurred in 2013 when Valve removed copies of 'Order of War: Challenge' from users' libraries after the game’s servers were shut down. Although it would be controversial for Sony to erase purchased games from digital libraries, the reality is that consumers have limited control over their digital assets, as they technically do not own them outright.
