In a significant shift, Sony has announced a price increase for its PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S., just eight months after the last hike. The digital version without a disc drive will now retail for $600, up from $500, while the standard PS5 with an optical drive will see its price rise from $550 to $650. Even more startling, the PS5 Pro will jump from $750 to an eye-watering $900. This price adjustment comes in the wake of ongoing shortages in memory and storage, which have been affecting various consumer tech sectors since late last year. The ripple effect of these shortages has led to many products going out of stock or experiencing delays, and it seems the gaming console market is not exempt from this trend. Notably, Sony is not alone in this predicament. Competing giants like Microsoft and Nintendo have also raised prices for their consoles throughout 2025, largely influenced by tariffs imposed during the previous U.S. administration rather than solely on component shortages. Historically, video game consoles tend to see price cuts as they age, but the PS5, which has been on the market for over five years, is now considered unusually expensive compared to its predecessors. A critical factor in this pricing situation is the increasing demand for memory chips from AI data centers. Manufacturers have shifted their production focus to prioritize the memory types used in AI accelerators, such as Nvidia’s H200, leaving a shortage for the consumer market. Furthermore, industry insiders indicate that the supply constraints are unlikely to ease in the near future. Companies like Kioxia report that their production capacities are already booked through the end of 2026. The complexities involved in chip manufacturing mean that scaling up production can take months or even years, and many manufacturers are hesitant to increase output without a clear demand forecast to avoid excess inventory. For gamers and prospective buyers, this means that the elevated prices for the PS5 and its variants are likely to remain for the foreseeable future, making the dream of owning a console increasingly expensive.
