Sony's Bungie cuts jobs across Destiny and Marathon Teams

In a significant workforce adjustment, Sony has announced layoffs at its game development studio, Bungie, affecting teams involved with both Destiny and Marathon. Hermen Hulst, CEO of the Studio Business Group at Sony Interactive Entertainment, expressed the emotional weight of this decision in a recent post, describing it as 'difficult' and 'painful.' He emphasized that the layoffs are crucial for the company to concentrate its financial and human resources on the studio's strategic initiatives moving forward. Bungie acknowledged that Destiny 2 has not met expectations in recent years, and with the final content update completed, the studio finds itself unable to sustain its previous workforce size, particularly as new projects are still in their infancy. Additionally, the performance of Marathon has not yielded the anticipated player engagement, adding to the challenges. Despite these setbacks, Hulst reiterated the importance of Marathon within the company's portfolio, stating in an internal communication that the decision to reduce staff was not made lightly. 'This is painful news, especially for talented colleagues whose roles have been eliminated. We explored multiple alternatives before concluding that a reduction was necessary to align the studio's resources with its current priorities and long-term goals,' he explained. To support those affected by the layoffs, Sony has pledged to provide transition assistance, which may include severance packages, career counseling, job placement services, and potential reassignment to other teams or studios. This commitment aims to soften the impact of the layoffs on employees as the studio adapts to its evolving business landscape.
