In a significant shift towards a fully digital landscape, Sony has declared that it will cease the production of physical discs for new PlayStation games starting January 2028. This decision signals the company's commitment to adapt to the evolving preferences of gamers, who increasingly favor digital purchases over traditional media. From 2028 onwards, all new titles will be exclusively available through the PlayStation Store and select digital retailers, while existing games released before this date will still be offered in physical format. This transition is expected to evoke a mix of nostalgia and acceptance among players, as physical copies have long been a cherished aspect of gaming culture. Sony's announcement highlights a significant trend in consumer behavior, with digital downloads accounting for a staggering 85% of full-game software sales on both PS4 and PS5, according to the company's financial report for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2025. In contrast, physical copies comprised only 15% of sales. The decline of physical games is further evidenced by the shrinking number of retail locations, as major retailers like GameStop have closed over 1,300 stores in the last two fiscal years due to the rising popularity of online purchasing. This announcement also arrives on the heels of mixed reactions from fans regarding the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6, where the so-called 'physical' edition will only include a download code rather than a physical disc. This shift underscores the fact that a segment of the gaming community remains passionate about collecting physical editions. Additionally, Sony took the opportunity to disclose that it will be closing the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3 in select regions later this year, followed by a global shutdown of the PS3 and PlayStation Vita stores next year. While players will still have access to previously purchased games, they will no longer be able to buy new digital content on those platforms once the stores are closed.
