Sony hikes PS5 prices by up to $150 citing 'pressures' in global economy

In a significant move, Sony announced on Friday that it will raise the prices of its flagship PlayStation 5 consoles for the second time within a year, attributing the decision to "pressures in the global economic landscape." Starting April 2, the price of the PS5 disc edition will rise from $549.99 to $649.99, marking a $100 increase from the previous adjustment made last year. Similarly, the digital edition will see a price hike of $100, bringing it up to $599.99. The PS5 Pro, the most advanced version of the console, will now cost $899.99 after a $150 increase. Addressing the price changes, Sony stated in a blog post, "We understand that price adjustments affect our community. After thorough consideration, we determined that this was a necessary step to continue providing innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players around the globe." The last price increase occurred against a backdrop of persistent inflation and complications resulting from U.S. tariffs, while Sony now faces a sharp rise in memory costs, a critical component for the PS5. This surge in memory prices is largely driven by heightened demand from AI data centers, which has tightened supply. In addition to the U.S., Sony is raising prices in Japan, the U.K., and Europe, with U.K. PS5 models increasing by approximately £90 (around $120). Piers Harding-Rolls, research director of games at Ampere Analysis, remarked to CNBC that such price hikes were anticipated due to the escalation in memory costs. "It seems likely that Sony had price protections for its components that have now expired. With no signs of prices stabilizing, Sony's decision appears aimed at safeguarding its slim hardware margins," commented Harding-Rolls. He also noted that it would not be surprising if competitors like Microsoft and Nintendo followed suit with their pricing strategies in the near future. Currently, Nintendo has maintained the price of its flagship Switch 2 console, which was launched just last year. However, Harding-Rolls highlighted that any price increase for the Switch 2 could be problematic for Nintendo as it seeks to establish the new platform. During a recent earnings call, a Sony executive mentioned that the company is focusing on monetizing its existing PS5 user base and expanding its software and network service revenue to mitigate the impact of rising memory costs. Furthermore, Harding-Rolls warned that ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, could lead to additional pressure on component prices, potentially ushering in a new wave of inflation.
