Sony erases digital content from libraries; we’re reminded we don’t own what we buy

In a recent announcement, Sony informed PlayStation users in the United Kingdom that they will soon lose access to a significant number of movies and shows previously purchased from the PlayStation Store. Starting September 1, customers will no longer be able to stream 551 titles from StudioCanal. Among the affected films are fan favorites such as "Outrage: Way of the Yakuza," "Paddington," "Paddington 2," "Pan's Labyrinth," "Rambo 3," "Terminator 2: Judgement Day," and "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." Sony cited content licensing agreements as the reason for this change, leading to concerns about digital ownership among consumers. As the deadline approaches, there remains a glimmer of hope that Sony could negotiate a new deal with StudioCanal, potentially allowing users to retain access to their purchased content. This situation echoes a previous incident in 2023 when Sony initially planned to remove 1,318 seasons of Discovery shows from users' libraries. However, a last-minute update to licensing arrangements allowed customers to keep their shows. As it stands, the fate of the affected titles remains uncertain, and users are left contemplating the implications of digital ownership in the age of streaming.
