Sony says “efficient” AI tools will lead to even more games flooding the market

The modern gaming landscape is witnessing a remarkable transformation, largely due to user-friendly game engines and the rapid shift towards digital distribution. This evolution has already resulted in a substantial rise in the number of commercial games launched each year, particularly on platforms like Steam. In a recent presentation to investors, Hideaki Nishino, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, projected that the influx of new titles is set to accelerate even further. He attributed this anticipated growth to the advent of advanced AI development tools, which are making it increasingly easier for both large and independent developers to efficiently embark on new projects. Nishino expressed confidence that players will soon experience a notable expansion in both the volume and variety of gaming content available to them. He explained that AI tools are dismantling traditional barriers to game creation, speeding up development cycles, and encouraging a broader range of creators to enter the marketplace. To illustrate his point, Nishino highlighted how Sony's internal game development teams are already leveraging AI technologies to streamline repetitive tasks. For instance, a revolutionary 3D animation tool named Mockingbird enables artists to convert raw motion capture data into in-game animations at unprecedented speeds. While it cannot replace the artistry of motion-capture actors, it significantly reduces the time required for animation work. Additionally, machine learning capabilities have improved the realism of animated models by processing videos of actual hairstyles, allowing for the automation of complex tasks that previously required meticulous manual effort from animators. This enhancement replaces the labor-intensive method of individually placing hundreds of hair strands. Hiroki Totoki, President and CEO of Sony Group, praised the efficiency brought about by these AI tools, asserting that they will pave the way for more ambitious and innovative projects that were once constrained by time and budget limitations. He also mentioned a collaborative pilot project with Bandai Namco, which showcased significant improvements in speed and productivity in video production processes. Although the team is working to refine generic AI models to ensure consistency and control, they have found that these tools can produce sophisticated and realistic results that were previously unattainable due to time constraints in production.
