The collaboration between Sony and Honda, known as Sony Honda Mobility, has officially decided to terminate its efforts on the two electric vehicles branded as "Afeela". This significant shift comes on the heels of Honda's announcement earlier this month regarding the cancellation of three planned electric vehicles for the U.S. market, a move that could potentially cost the automaker approximately $16 billion. Honda cited President Trump's tariffs and escalating competition from China as key factors influencing this decision. In light of these developments, Sony Honda Mobility revealed that it had intended to leverage specific technologies and assets from Honda to develop the Afeela sedan and SUV. With Honda's strategic pivot, the joint venture finds itself unable to proceed with the vehicle production. The Afeela 1 sedan was anticipated to debut later this year, carrying a hefty starting price of around $90,000. Uncertainty looms over the future of this joint venture and the fate of its several hundred employees based in Tokyo and California. In a press release, Sony Honda Mobility indicated that discussions regarding the future direction and long-term positioning of the joint venture with both companies will continue, with intentions to announce updates as soon as possible. Sony's foray into the automotive world first captured public attention at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show, where it unveiled a concept vehicle named Vision-S, showcasing its technological innovations in mobility. This prototype featured a vast dashboard display, immersive 360 audio, and a set of 33 sensors, highlighting Sony's vision for the future of transportation. Initially, it was unclear whether Sony had plans for actual vehicle production, but in 2022, the company formed a partnership with Honda to produce the Afeela models. By 2023, the branding was presented to the public. However, the U.S. electric vehicle landscape has undergone dramatic changes since then, with tariffs and policy shifts leading to the collapse of several EV startups and delays in product launches. Major auto manufacturers have also scrapped numerous electric vehicle plans. The market for Afeela EVs appeared increasingly challenging even before Honda's recent announcement, as the joint venture faced stiff competition from established luxury brands like Rivian and Lucid Motors, both of which offer cutting-edge technology and strong branding. The last decade has underscored the difficulties of launching a sustainable automotive company in the U.S., particularly for ventures backed by substantial institutional support.
