In a significant move, Sony has announced an increase in the prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles, effective Thursday, August 21. The price hike, which amounts to approximately $50, is attributed to a "challenging economic environment" influenced by recent tariffs on imported goods. In the United States, the new prices will be set at $549.99 for the standard PlayStation 5, $499.99 for the Digital Edition, and $749.99 for the PlayStation 5 Pro. This decision follows the announcement from the White House of a 15% tariff on imports from Japan, prompting Sony to adjust its pricing strategy accordingly. While the price adjustments are limited to the U.S. market, Sony clarified that it has no immediate plans to alter prices in other regions or increase costs for accessories. However, the company had previously raised prices for PlayStation consoles in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand back in April, citing similar economic pressures. Notably, Sony's price hike comes after several of its competitors also announced adjustments to their gaming products in light of the new tariffs. Microsoft revealed in May that it would be raising its console prices by $80 to $100, along with increasing costs for certain games and accessories. Meanwhile, Nintendo opted to increase the prices of select accessories for its upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console, but left the console's price unchanged.
