Sonos says it’s forced to raise prices while trying to win back customers

In a challenging turn of events for Sonos, the company has disclosed plans to increase the prices of its audio products this year, complicating its strategy to regain momentum in the market. This announcement comes in light of new tariffs imposed by the U.S. government, which are set to take effect immediately. Among the tariffs is a 19 percent charge on goods imported from Malaysia, a reduction from the previously threatened 25 percent. Vietnam is also impacted, with a new 20 percent tariff that has been significantly lowered from an initial 46 percent rate introduced earlier this year. According to Sonos CEO Tom Conrad, the firm manufactures most of its audio devices in the U.S., with certain accessories produced in Malaysia and Vietnam under a partnership with Sonance for in-wall and in-ceiling speakers. During a recent earnings call, Conrad explained the ramifications of these tariffs, noting the potential for price increases across specific product lines. Although Sonos has yet to disclose which items will see a price hike or the extent of those increases, the CEO indicated that the company is actively evaluating its offerings. He emphasized the importance of monitoring consumer behavior and market competition following the adjustments, stating that Sonos plans to collaborate with its distribution partners to refine pricing strategies as necessary. Conrad highlighted that the company's ultimate goal is to develop a pricing approach that maximizes gross profit, illustrating the delicate balance Sonos must strike as it navigates these economic challenges while striving to win back customers.
