Solo founders are using AI to take on the consumer brand industry, dominated by giants

In a landscape dominated by large conglomerates, solo entrepreneurs are finding innovative ways to navigate the consumer packaged goods (CPG) sector, thanks to the power of artificial intelligence. For many, the disparity in resources can be daunting, but AI is emerging as a game-changer, enabling individual founders to compete more effectively. Ezra Rufino, the founder of the functional beverage company Pow Organics, shares how AI has transformed his operations. "I'm able to keep up with things that bigger brands with bigger teams are able to do," he explained. While he acknowledges the advantages of having a larger team, Rufino emphasizes that AI has significantly leveled the playing field for him. Amber Chaudhry, who leads the teen skincare brand Noori, echoes this sentiment. As a pharmacist, she has a strong background in product formulation, but she has also had to become proficient in various tech platforms like Shopify and Amazon, as well as digital marketing tools. "It was a lot of learning curves over and over — and AI guided me," she noted, highlighting how she uses ChatGPT to demystify complex analytics and tech onboarding processes. For Ann Ragan Kearns, the founder of Medalist Skin, AI facilitated crucial website enhancements that she might not have identified on her own. "Who knew that I just needed to move my free shipping banner from the bottom to the top?" she recalled, stating that AI has saved her substantial costs on hiring consultants who were not the right fit. Rufino has also turned to AI for assistance in optimizing his listings on the wholesale platform Faire, resulting in a remarkable 305% year-over-year growth in the fourth quarter. He noted that AI provided practical suggestions, including rewritten listings and photography tips, which he implemented immediately. The cost-effectiveness of AI tools is particularly beneficial for these solopreneurs, who often face inflated fees from consultants offering minimal value. Kearns pointed out that many professionals exploit the lack of knowledge among solo founders, charging high rates for simple tasks that AI can effortlessly handle. Moreover, AI allows these entrepreneurs to accomplish tasks typically requiring extensive teams. Kearns employs AI tools to conduct market research, uploading reports and engaging with AI to evaluate potential ingredients for her products. Rufino is also leveraging AI to maintain a fresh brand image. Using tools like Nano Banana, he can generate high-quality images without the significant financial outlay that larger companies invest in professional photoshoots. Beyond operational efficiencies, AI serves as a strategic partner for these solopreneurs. Rufino describes using ChatGPT as a sounding board for ideas, helping him prioritize opportunities that align with his limited time and resources. Similarly, Kearns utilizes AI to analyze competitor campaigns, recalibrating her expectations and focusing her efforts where they can yield the best results. In summary, AI is not just a tool for these solo founders; it's becoming an integral component of their strategic framework, enabling them to thrive in a competitive industry dominated by giants.
