An explosion 92 million miles away just grounded Jeff Bezos’ New Glenn rocket

The highly anticipated second flight of Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket has been postponed due to a powerful surge of magnetized plasma from the Sun. This solar storm has enveloped Earth, creating stunning auroras and raising alarms about its potential effects on communication systems, navigation, and power grids. In a statement issued by Blue Origin, the company revealed that NASA, which is the customer for this mission, opted to delay the launch of its ESCAPADE spacecraft, designed to study Mars, until conditions improve. "New Glenn is ready to launch," Blue Origin communicated on X, emphasizing that the decision was made in light of the elevated solar activity that could adversely affect the spacecraft. The New Glenn rocket, founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos, is set to execute its second flight and aims to successfully retrieve its reusable first-stage booster after launch, landing it on a platform in the Atlantic Ocean. While it is not common for launches to be postponed due to space weather, it has happened before. For instance, an Antares cargo rocket launch was delayed in 2014 due to increased solar activity, and SpaceX recently postponed a Falcon 9 launch in 2023 for similar reasons. The most recent solar storm also serves as a reminder of the risks involved in space launches. In 2022, nearly 40 Starlink satellites were lost after a geomagnetic storm caused atmospheric expansion that pulled them out of orbit. However, the ESCAPADE mission's satellites are not expected to face atmospheric drag as they are headed into deep space. Instead, the main concern is the potential interference from high-energy solar particles that could disrupt the electronic systems on the twin probes. Blue Origin has not yet provided a new launch date for the ESCAPADE mission. With several other launches planned from Cape Canaveral in the coming days, including those from United Launch Alliance and SpaceX, it is likely that the next opportunity for New Glenn and ESCAPADE will not arise until the weekend.
