Solar outproduced coal in April—but not on the grid

In a remarkable shift within the U.S. energy landscape, preliminary reports reveal that solar power has officially eclipsed coal generation for the first time. This significant milestone was highlighted in the latest grid data from the Energy Information Administration, which confirmed that solar production outpaced coal in April 2026. However, this achievement comes with an important caveat: a significant portion of solar energy is generated by rooftop installations and is utilized on-site, meaning it never actually reaches the grid. The energy market dynamics leading up to this historic moment are noteworthy. After a brief increase in coal consumption last year, coal's usage has resumed its downward trend, despite numerous government efforts to bolster it. In contrast, solar energy has been on an upward trajectory, fueled by its status as the most cost-effective option for expanding energy generation capacity in many regions across the U.S. Despite this rapid growth, solar energy still started from a relatively low base. During the early months of the year, seasonal factors contribute to lower solar output. Thus, while solar energy experienced over 20 percent growth year-over-year, it only constituted about 6 percent of the total power on the U.S. grid, compared to coal's 16 percent. Looking ahead, the longer days and increased sunlight in April are expected to enhance solar production further, combined with the influx of new installations typically completed towards the year's end. As coal continues to decline, the gap between solar and coal generation has narrowed significantly. A year ago, coal accounted for 14 percent of grid power while solar represented only 8.3 percent. The latest figures for April 2026 show coal at 12 percent and solar at 9.4 percent. Although a gap remains, it has substantially diminished, indicating a transformative shift in the energy sector as renewable sources gain ground.
