Global growth in solar “the largest ever observed for any source”

A recent report from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) has unveiled groundbreaking insights into global energy trends, particularly highlighting a monumental shift towards solar energy. This report, which extends findings from the International Renewable Energy Agency, reveals that 2025 marked a pivotal year for solar power, establishing its dominance in the energy sector. The surge in solar energy production has been a significant factor in the acceleration of carbon-free energy sources, which outpaced the rising global demand for energy. The EIA's analysis, encompassing various aspects of energy use including electricity generation, transportation, and home heating, suggests that we are now entering what they term the "Age of Electricity." Among notable trends, the demand for electricity has doubled compared to the overall energy demand. Electric vehicle (EV) sales have soared by nearly 40%, accounting for a quarter of all car sales last year. Although the impact on electricity demand from EVs remains modest at this stage, it is contributing to the overall increase in oil consumption, which rose by 0.7% in 2025, a significant reduction from the average growth of the previous decade. While heat pump sales remained stable, their prior growth has resulted in heat pumps now representing the majority of new heating units in several countries. However, colder weather in densely populated regions has led to a rise in natural gas demand, with a modest increase of just 1% compared to the previous year. Looking ahead, these trends are expected to accelerate in 2026, particularly due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which are likely to disrupt oil flow globally. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz could heavily impact nations reliant on liquefied natural gas from the Persian Gulf. This scenario may not only lead to reduced fossil fuel consumption due to limited availability and rising prices but could also catalyze a quicker transition towards electrified alternatives, supported by government initiatives aimed at mitigating future fuel crises.
