After a brief delay, Northrop Grumman's Cygnus XL cargo freighter successfully docked with the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday, delivering over five tons of essential supplies and scientific experiments to the crew aboard the station. NASA astronaut Jonny Kim skillfully maneuvered the robotic arm to capture the Cygnus spacecraft at 7:24 AM EDT (11:24 UTC). Once secured, the robotic arm carefully positioned the cargo ship above a connection port on the station's Unity module. Sixteen bolts then locked into place, establishing a secure mechanical link between the Cygnus and the ISS. The cargo ship is expected to remain attached to the station for up to six months, during which astronauts will unload its contents and refill it with waste materials. Following its mission, the Cygnus will make a controlled reentry into the Pacific Ocean. This commercial resupply mission commenced with a timely launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Sunday aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. However, the journey hit a snag on Tuesday when the spacecraft's main engine prematurely shut down during critical adjustments for its approach to the ISS. NASA later confirmed that this issue would hinder the spacecraft's scheduled arrival. Engineers traced the engine's untimely shutdown back to onboard software designed to prevent potential issues, ensuring the spacecraft's safety.
