A software CEO called me on the weekend recently with painful predictions. One is already coming true.

A recent conversation with a CEO from a leading software firm revealed alarming predictions for the industry. He warned of a looming financial reset driven by the rise of generative AI, which is reshaping how software is developed and altering traditional business models, particularly for Software as a Service (SaaS) providers. The CEO, who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive matters candidly, emphasized that stock-based compensation (SBC) for SaaS companies is currently unsustainable. With anticipated slower revenue growth, he suggested that companies must reduce SBC and adopt stricter financial discipline. His predictions are already materializing, as evidenced by Atlassian announcing a 10% workforce reduction, following Block's drastic cuts of 40%. Both companies cited the influence of generative AI on their operations, yet they continue to seek new engineering talent. Atlassian's CEO, Mike Cannon-Brooks, stated that in five years, their engineering workforce will be larger, albeit more efficient due to advancements in technology. The surge in generative AI is making it easier to produce software, leading to an oversupply in the market. Consequently, the value of software is declining, but this trend may ultimately benefit the tech sector by increasing usage. However, the demand for skilled engineers remains high to ensure the functionality and reliability of this proliferating software. As software companies face pressures from investors regarding stock compensation, many are opting to cut jobs. This strategy not only reduces immediate SBC expenses but also alleviates concerns over diluting shareholder value. Analysts have noted that discussions around SBC have intensified, particularly as companies navigate the financial implications of their compensation structures. The current environment mirrors the challenges faced in 2022 when the tech industry reeled from an overzealous hiring spree during the pandemic. Now, as financial discipline becomes paramount, the industry must confront similar realities, as echoed by the CEO's warning. The need for a shift in how software companies manage their resources has never been more critical.
