Masayoshi Son, the CEO of SoftBank, has expressed skepticism regarding Elon Musk's vision of establishing artificial intelligence data centers in outer space. During a recent shareholder meeting, Son posed critical questions about the practicality and economic viability of such an initiative, asking, "What's the point? What's the benefit of building AI data centers in space?" Son's remarks came in response to inquiries from shareholders about Musk's ambitious plans. He argued that while reduced electricity costs might seem appealing, they do not account for the myriad complexities involved in operating data centers in orbit. According to Son, electricity only represents about 7% of the total operational costs for AI infrastructure. He emphasized that factors such as chip costs and other operational expenses dominate the remaining 93%. The billionaire further elaborated that any potential savings from lower energy costs would be overshadowed by the additional expenses related to maintenance and networking challenges in space. He cautioned that understanding the economic and technical trade-offs of such a venture could take years. In light of this, Son reiterated SoftBank's commitment to leading the charge in the burgeoning AI industry. He stated, "The winner will be decided in the next few years, so instead of focusing on uncertain future prospects in space, we prefer to concentrate on immediate opportunities within the AI sector." While Son acknowledged Musk's entrepreneurial spirit, he remained unconvinced of the feasibility of space-based data centers. Musk, known for his role as CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has advocated for this concept as a solution to the escalating energy demands of AI. Earlier this year, SpaceX announced its plans to create a network of orbital data centers composed of a million satellites, initiating recruitment to make this vision a reality. Other tech magnates, including Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Google's Sundar Pichai, have shown interest in the potential of space data centers to support AI growth. Pichai has referred to the initiative as a "moonshot," suggesting that it may be a viable option as computational needs escalate. Conversely, OpenAI's Sam Altman has dismissed the idea, calling it "ridiculous" for the current decade, asserting that while space holds great potential for various applications, data centers in orbit are not yet practical at scale.
