In a significant move, SoftBank has invested over $450 million into Graphcore, a UK-based chip company that specializes in artificial intelligence technologies. This investment aligns with the Japanese investment powerhouse's ongoing commitment to expanding its footprint in AI infrastructure and hardware. According to a filing with Companies House, Graphcore issued a single share valued at $457 million on April 10. A spokesperson from Graphcore confirmed to sources that this capital injection is indeed from SoftBank, although the investment giant has not yet commented publicly. SoftBank's acquisition of Graphcore in 2024 was seen as a strategic partnership aimed at advancing the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI)—a form of AI that could potentially rival or exceed human intelligence capabilities. Reports indicate that these recent funds are just part of a larger financial arrangement expected between the two companies this year, as disclosed by an anonymous insider. The investment in Graphcore is not an isolated incident; it reflects SoftBank's broader strategy of pouring billions into the AI sector, including substantial stakes in companies like OpenAI and various infrastructure initiatives. Once considered a competitor to Nvidia, Graphcore had raised substantial funding but faced challenges in establishing a strong market presence prior to its acquisition by SoftBank. Since joining forces with SoftBank, Graphcore has been at the center of several pivotal AI infrastructure projects, including a partnership in the ambitious $500 billion Stargate initiative alongside OpenAI and Oracle. Furthermore, plans are in motion for SoftBank to launch a dedicated AI and robotics company in the United States later this year, as reported by the Financial Times. Additionally, SoftBank is in discussions regarding a significant AI data center project in France, indicating its aggressive expansion strategy in the AI domain. Masayoshi Son, the founder and CEO of SoftBank, has previously praised Graphcore for its profound expertise in chip design, which enhances the capabilities established by Arm—a semiconductor company that SoftBank acquired a majority stake in back in 2016. In another bold move, Graphcore recently announced plans to invest up to £1 billion in a new AI campus in Bengaluru, India, with hundreds of job openings in AI, silicon, software, and systems engineering, as detailed on their official website.
