SoftBank shares surge over 16% as Japan tech stock-fueled rally lifts Nikkei 225 to record highs

Shares of SoftBank Group, a leading player in the Japanese tech investment sector, experienced a remarkable surge of 16.5% on Thursday. This rally coincided with a broader upswing in Japanese markets, particularly the Nikkei 225, which reached unprecedented levels following a holiday break. As investors returned after an extended Golden Week, there was a rush to capitalize on a global rally driven by advancements in artificial intelligence. This surge was not limited to SoftBank; other tech stocks also saw significant gains. For instance, Advantest, a manufacturer of chip-testing equipment, climbed nearly 7.8%, while Tokyo Electron, a semiconductor equipment supplier, jumped by 9.2%. Renesas Electronics, a provider of chip solutions, posted an impressive 13.8% increase. The growth in Japan's tech stocks followed a strong performance on Wall Street, where the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index hit new highs, fueled by a surge in AI-related stocks. Notably, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. saw an increase of 18.6%, Arm Holdings rose by 13%, and Super Micro Computer Inc. soared by 24.5%. Billy Leung, investment strategist at Global X ETFs, commented on the situation, stating, "Japan was closed during a period of significant global market activity, resulting in today's surge reflecting multiple trading sessions in one." He also noted that easing geopolitical tensions, particularly between the U.S. and Iran, contributed to the positive sentiment in the market. SoftBank's share price increase is particularly significant due to its strong connections with Arm and OpenAI, both influential players in the AI landscape. Leung pointed out that SoftBank serves as a public proxy for these entities, further driving investor interest. Rolf Bulk, head of semiconductor and infrastructure at The Futurum Group, emphasized that the rally indicates a growing optimism about the demand for AI-related data center infrastructure. He noted that the demand for CPUs, which are essential for AI inference workloads, is becoming increasingly critical in the ongoing development of AI technologies. AMD's recent forecast suggests that the market for data center CPUs could expand to $120 billion by 2030, with an annual growth rate exceeding 35%.
