Snowflake to buy database startup Crunchy Data for about $250 million

On Monday, Snowflake, a leader in data analytics software, announced its acquisition of Crunchy Data, a cloud-based database startup, for approximately $250 million. The deal, confirmed by a source who requested anonymity, positions Snowflake to enhance its offerings in the competitive data landscape. Crunchy Data specializes in a cloud-hosted version of the PostgreSQL open-source database, which has surpassed MySQL in popularity, as highlighted in the 2023 Stack Overflow developer survey. Their platform boasts improved security and performance features compared to traditional open-source options. This acquisition follows rival Databricks' recent announcement to purchase Neon, another PostgreSQL-based service, for roughly $1 billion. Interestingly, Snowflake had previously considered acquiring Neon but ultimately decided against it. Crunchy Data reportedly generates over $30 million in annual revenue. Both Snowflake and Databricks are strategically positioning themselves to leverage corporate investments aimed at advancing artificial intelligence technologies. With the addition of Crunchy Data, Snowflake plans to introduce early access to a PostgreSQL database service, streamlining data migration processes for clients. This initiative aims to facilitate more efficient queries across extensive data sets, according to Christian Kleinerman, Snowflake's executive vice president of product. Snowflake's stock has seen a 36% increase this year, with analysts from Stifel comparing the company's performance to that of top golfer Scottie Scheffler, following a robust quarterly report that exceeded projections with a 25% year-over-year revenue growth. CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy emphasized their commitment to equipping customers for success in the evolving landscape of agentic AI during a recent earnings call. Founded in 2012 and headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina, Crunchy Data employs around 100 individuals and counts major clients such as Kyndryl, Thales, UPS, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security among its roster.
