Snowflake to acquire database startup Crunchy Data

In a significant move within the tech industry, Snowflake has announced its plan to acquire Crunchy Data, a partner specializing in Postgres databases. This acquisition, valued at approximately $250 million according to insiders, is part of a broader trend where major technology firms are investing in data startups to enhance their database capabilities that support AI functionalities. Recent acquisitions in the sector include Salesforce's purchase of Informatica to improve its data management tools and Alation's acquisition of Numbers Station to enhance AI capabilities for its clients. Crunchy Data, which has been in operation for 13 years, provides essential tools for leveraging Postgres, an open-source database management system favored by developers for its compatibility with SQL. Its client roster includes notable names such as UPS and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The acquisition will enable Snowflake to introduce Snowflake Postgres, an enterprise-level PostgreSQL database designed for its customers and partners like Blue Yonder and LandingAI. The technology from this deal is expected to be available in private preview shortly. Vivek Raghunathan, Snowflake's SVP of engineering, emphasized the company's mission to create a comprehensive data and AI platform, highlighting that this acquisition is pivotal in meeting the growing demand for Postgres integration within the Snowflake AI Data Cloud. Additionally, Snowflake has recently expanded its services with new connectors for PostgreSQL and MySQL, further strengthening its database offerings.
