Snap climbs 13% as activist Irenic suggests changes to boost stock's value 7x

Shares of Snap surged by 13% on Tuesday after Irenic Capital Management, a shareholder, reached out to CEO Evan Spiegel with a proposal aiming to significantly enhance the company's stock value. According to Irenic, the proposed changes could potentially elevate Snap's stock price from $3.93 to over $26 per share, a remarkable increase of nearly 600%. In their correspondence, which was shared on savesnapnow.com, Irenic highlighted that the current strategies at Snap are not yielding the expected results. The firm, managing approximately $2.5 billion in assets and holding around 2.5% of Snap's Class A shares, outlined a plan titled "6 Steps to 7X". This plan advocates for drastic measures, including the potential closure or spinoff of Snap's augmented reality division, Specs, which had only recently been established as a subsidiary. Irenic also suggested that Snap should leverage artificial intelligence to trim its workforce by 21%, equating to 1,000 jobs, to streamline operations. The advisory firm referenced similar workforce reductions by companies like Uber, Meta, and Block, emphasizing the need for Snap to rationalize costs through AI integration. In response to the recommendations, Snap's chairman, Michael Lynton, expressed the company's openness to shareholder input, affirming that they regularly engage with investors regarding strategic decisions, capital allocation, and governance. He stated that Snap is already implementing measures to enhance performance, improve cash flow, and mitigate stock dilution, with a commitment to actions that promote long-term value for all stakeholders. Since its public debut in 2017, Snap's shares have plummeted by approximately 83%. Recently, the company introduced a creator subscription feature aimed at diversifying its revenue streams. Additionally, during the Q4 earnings call for fiscal 2025, Snap announced a $500 million plan for stock repurchases, signaling efforts to bolster shareholder confidence.
