Snapchat is shifting gears from its traditional focus on private messaging to introduce an innovative feature dubbed 'Topic Chats.' This new functionality allows users to engage in discussions about trending events and various interests, ranging from the thrilling world of Formula 1 to popular reality shows like 'Below Deck.' To maintain user privacy, Snapchat ensures that profiles remain hidden from anyone not on a user's friends list, thereby minimizing unsolicited friend requests or direct messages. While users' display names will accompany their messages, others won't be able to access profiles through Topic Chats, as explained by the company in an email to TechCrunch. Display names, unlike usernames, are also not searchable, enhancing user anonymity. To ensure a safe environment, Snapchat plans to implement advanced LLM technology along with other safety protocols to monitor conversations within Topic Chats. All messages must comply with Snapchat's Community Guidelines, and users are encouraged to report any inappropriate content. The platform has committed to taking action against those who breach its policies, including issuing warnings and potentially blocking offenders. An exciting aspect of Topic Chats is its social connectivity feature, allowing users to discover which chats their friends are participating in, thereby facilitating connections over shared interests. Additionally, the chats will be complemented by related Spotlight videos—Snapchat's version of short-form videos akin to TikTok's. Previously, the only venue for public interactions on Snapchat was through Spotlight comments. The launch of Topic Chats was inspired by user engagement in these comment sections, as the company recognized a desire for broader conversations. According to Snapchat, 'Snapchatters create billions of Snaps daily, sharing moments with friends and family. As we expanded services like Spotlight, we found that our community enjoys discussing trending topics and events publicly.' Starting in the coming weeks, users in Canada, New Zealand, and the United States will begin to see Topic Chats rolled out in various areas of the app, including Chat shortcuts, search functions, the Stories page, and alongside Spotlight videos. If users encounter a prominent yellow button on a Story or Spotlight labeled 'Join the Chat,' they can simply click it to enter a chatroom. Furthermore, Snapchat will retain messages sent within Topic Chats for up to five years, providing a lasting record of these public conversations.
