On Wednesday, Snapchat announced the debut of its latest subscription tier, Lens+, priced at $8.99 per month. This new offering is designed to provide users with exclusive access to a variety of Lenses and augmented reality (AR) experiences. Lens+ subscribers will enjoy all the benefits of the standard Snapchat+ tier, which costs $3.99 monthly, along with the ability to utilize hundreds of unique Lenses that allow for playful creativity and sharing of Snaps with friends. The company highlighted that the initial offerings will include Lenses developed by Snapchat and select creators, featuring exclusive new AI video Lenses and a fresh Bitmoji Game Lens, with additional AR experiences set to be introduced weekly. In a statement to TechCrunch, a representative from Snapchat clarified that the platform will not restrict any previously free Lenses. Furthermore, in the upcoming months, select creators will have the opportunity to monetize their exclusive Lenses, opening up new avenues for income generation on the platform. However, details regarding the revenue-sharing model for these creators have yet to be disclosed. Since its launch in 2022, Snapchat+ has amassed over 14 million subscribers, significantly contributing to the company's revenue growth. In their first-quarter report released in April, Snap revealed a revenue of $1.36 billion, marking a 14% increase compared to the previous year. The surge in revenue was linked to the success of the Snapchat+ subscription service and advancements in their advertising capabilities. By introducing the Lens+ tier, Snap aims to further accelerate revenue growth by offering more sophisticated Lenses and AR experiences for a fee. It’s important to note that Snapchat also provides a higher-tier option, the Platinum Snapchat+ at $14.99 per month, which removes ads and includes all features from the standard and Lens+ tiers.
