Snapchat announces ‘The Snappys,’ its first-ever creator awards show

On Wednesday, Snapchat revealed plans for its first-ever awards event, dubbed "The Snappys," scheduled for March 21. This groundbreaking awards show aims to honor the creators who are significantly influencing culture on the platform. Awards will be handed out in various categories, including "Spotlight MVP," "Best Storyteller," and "Breakout Creator of the Year." Additionally, there will be accolades recognizing achievements in fashion, beauty, sports, music, food, and gaming, along with categories celebrating collaboration, comedy, and cultural impact. According to a blog post from the company, these honors aim to reflect the diverse ways creators initiate conversations, foster community, and shape cultural narratives on Snapchat. As part of its commitment to acknowledging creators as more than just users, Snapchat positions them as artists, entertainers, and cultural leaders. The move comes as part of a broader trend among social media platforms to establish awards for creators. For instance, last October, Meta-owned Instagram unveiled its own “Ring” award to celebrate creators globally, offering unique physical awards designed by renowned fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner, alongside digital recognition on profiles. In November, TikTok also made a splash with its inaugural TikTok Awards in the U.S., featuring specific categories such as “Creator of the Year” and “Video of the Year.” TikTok has previously hosted similar events in countries like Germany, Mexico, and Korea. Unlike TikTok’s format, Snapchat will present its awards in a traditional live ceremony, where winners will be announced during the event. The Snappys will gather creators, industry luminaries, and notable guests, including DJ Khaled, who will receive the “Lifetime Achievement Award.” With this awards initiative, Snapchat and its competitors aim to redefine their roles beyond social networking, asserting their presence in the entertainment sector.
