Snap is implementing significant changes to its Snapchat Memories feature, transitioning from unlimited storage to defined limits. Launched in 2016, Memories has evolved into an extensive repository, amassing over a trillion saved Snaps globally. Under the new guidelines, users will be restricted to 5GB of free storage, with the option to purchase additional space through various paid plans. To accommodate users who require more storage, Snap has rolled out several new Memories Storage Plans. The introductory plan offers 100GB for a monthly fee of $1.99. For current Snapchat+ subscribers, who pay $3.99 monthly, their storage limit will automatically increase to 250GB. For users needing even more space, a Platinum tier is now available, providing 5TB of storage for $15.99 per month. The company has reassured users that most will not feel the impact of these changes, as many are below the 5GB limit. However, for those already exceeding this cap, Snap is granting a one-year grace period during which they can utilize temporary storage before needing to select a paid plan. This shift highlights Snap's strategy to broaden its revenue streams beyond advertising. Just last month, the company introduced Lens+, a subscription service priced at $9 per month, which offers exclusive augmented reality features. While the update may not significantly affect casual users, it poses a dilemma for those who use Snapchat as a long-term archive for their photos. Users will now need to consider whether to delete saved Snaps or opt for a paid plan to retain their precious memories.
